Comparative dynamics of suction feeding in marine and freshwater three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus: kinematics and geometric morphometrics
Locomotion and feeding are key axes of diversity among fishes, and these are commonly integrated for successful prey capture. However, little is known about biomechanical variation among highly ecologically divergent populations of fishes. Three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, is an ideal species for teasing apart the relationships between ecology, form and function, given the numer...
متن کاملTemporal Stability of Genetic Variability and Differentiation in the Three-Spined Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)
Temporal variation in allele frequencies, whether caused by deterministic or stochastic forces, can inform us about interesting demographic and evolutionary phenomena occurring in wild populations. In spite of the continued surge of interest in the genetics of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations, little attention has been paid towards the temporal stability of allele f...
متن کاملPhylogeography and Conservation Genetics of the Ibero-Balearic Three-Spined Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)
Genetic isolation and drift may imperil peripheral populations of wide-ranging species more than central ones. Therefore, information about species genetic variability and population structure is invaluable for conservation managers. The Iberian populations of three-spined stickleback lie at the southwestern periphery of the European distribution of Gasterosteus aculeatus. This teleost is a pro...
متن کاملLatitudinal variation in photoperiodic response of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in western North America.
Reproductive maturation in both male and female three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus was strongly photoperiodic in a northern population (Alaska, 61 degrees N) but not in a southern population (Oregon, 43 degrees N) from western North America. Increasing reliance on photoperiod with increasing latitude is a general phenomenon among vertebrates, and is probably due to the anticipation...
متن کاملParental fanning behavior and prolactin cell activity in the male three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus L.
During the period that sexually mature male three-spined sticklebacks display parental fanning behavior, the rate of synthesis and release of the prolactin cells in the hypophysis, as estimated with quantitative electron microscopy, is enhanced considerably. This finding points to involvement of endogenous prolactin in the regulation of parental fanning behavior in this species.
